About
The Dealer keeps the record
Every painting that makes a record has a trail behind it: a family that left in a hurry, a thief with a good eye, a kitchen wall where nobody looked twice. The Dealer follows those trails, and writes down what the auction houses rarely do: who owned the picture, who sold it, and what it fetched on the day.
Stolen Art Dealer began as @stolenartdealer on Instagram, one record-setting work per Reel. This site is the Collection behind the Reels: each work with its museum label, the sale that made the news, its provenance, and where to look closer.
The name
Nothing here is stolen. Every sale is on the record.
How prices are reported
A price is what the work fetched at public auction, buyer’s premium included, in US dollars at the time of sale. Where a sale was in another currency, the work’s own page gives that figure and the rate. Sales from before buyer’s premiums existed are marked as hammer prices. We do not adjust for inflation unless we say so.
How the entries are made
The Dealer is the voice of the house. Entries are researched and drafted with AI assistance, then checked against auction-house records, museum collections and the major press. Each entry lists its sources. Where a detail is reported but unproven, the entry says so. The narration in our Reels is AI-generated. The full account is on the Method page.
Correct the record
Mistakes are corrected quickly. Use “Correct the record” at the foot of any work’s page, or the contact form, and see our corrections policy.
