How can we help?
Common questions
Is anything here actually stolen?
No. Stolen Art Dealer is the name of our publication. We tell the stories of record-setting paintings, and our shop sells reproductions of public-domain works. We never buy, sell or handle stolen art.
Where do the prices come from?
Public auction results, as reported by the auction house. Prices include the buyer’s premium, in US dollars at the time of sale, unless a page says otherwise. Sources are listed on every work’s page.
Why can I buy prints of some paintings but not others?
We only make products of paintings in the public domain: the artist died more than 70 years ago and the work was made before 1931. Works still in copyright stay in the stories only.
When does the shop open?
Soon. You can already browse prints and objects and add them to your bag; checkout opens at launch.
Where do you ship?
To US addresses only for now, free on orders over $100. See shipping for times and costs, or tell us where you are on the international page.
Can I return something?
Everything is made to order, so we can’t take back items for a change of mind or the wrong size. If anything arrives damaged, misprinted or wrong, we reprint it or refund you. See returns.
Do I need an account?
Only to buy. Signing in is a 6-digit code sent to your email; there’s no password.
How do I get 10% off?
Play The Estimate. Score 350 or more out of 500 and you can claim a courtesy of 10% off your first order of $30 or more, emailed to you when you open an account, at no charge. One code per account; not valid on numbered editions.
What is a numbered edition?
A giclée print made in an edition of 100 for each size, numbered in the margin and sent with a certificate. Once a size’s 100 are sold, no more numbered prints of it are made. Editions are reproductions and are not signed by the artist.
How do I correct the record?
Use “Correct the record” at the foot of any work’s page. We check every report against our sources.
