Camille Pissarro painted Le Boulevard Montmartre, brume du matin in 1897. It is an oil on canvas, 54 by 65.5 centimetres, and it shows the Paris boulevard in morning mist. It belongs to Pissarro's series of boulevard views.
The Galerie Durand-Ruel in Paris acquired the picture from the artist on 11 May 1897. Durand-Ruel's New York branch held it in 1926, and in 1949 it passed to Madeleine de Brécey, a granddaughter of Paul Durand-Ruel. The dealer Sam Salz then handled it, and Mrs Etta E. Steinberg acquired it from him in May 1956. It was sold from her collection at Christie's in New York on 19 May 1981, as lot 335, to the buyer who consigned it in 2018.
Sotheby's offered the painting in London on 19 June 2018, in its Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale, as lot 10, with an estimate of £3,000,000 to £5,000,000. ArtsLife, reproducing the sale results, gives the price as £3,490,000. Sotheby's lists it as $4.6 million. Bloomberg reports that final prices at that sale included the buyer's commission.
