Francisco de Goya painted Bullfight (Suerte de varas) in Paris in July 1824 for Joaquín María de Ferrer, whose initials and the date appear in an inscription on the back. The Fundación Goya en Aragón gives the size of the oil on canvas as 50 by 61 centimetres. The Los Angeles Times describes an injured bull beside two gored horses, a picador leaning over his lance on a blindfolded horse, and a group of matadors looking on.

Later ownership is reported in two ways. The Fundación says the picture passed from Ferrer to the Marquis of Baroja in Madrid before 1900 and then by inheritance to the Marchioness of Gándara in Rome. The Los Angeles Times says it stayed with Ferrer's family until 1992.

Sotheby's sold it in London on 9 December 1992, with an estimate of £4 million to £6 million. The Independent reports the price as £4.95 million and as an auction record for a Goya painting, the previous one being £313,900 in 1989. The Los Angeles Times reports that the J. Paul Getty Museum paid $7.4 million, with William Jordan bidding. The Fundación's catalogue entry gives the lot number as 84.
