Sir John Leicester, later 1st Baron de Tabley, bought it from the artist on 1 September 1808 for 200 guineas. At his sale at Christie's on 7 July 1827, James Morrison acquired it for 205 guineas. It then passed by descent in the Morrison family until Sotheby's, London, sold it on 9 July 2008 as lot 91, where the most recent owner bought it.

Christie's offered it in New York on 25 January 2023 as lot 153, in The Artistic Journey, a West Coast collection sale, with an estimate of $4,000,000 to $6,000,000. The price realised was $4,620,000, which includes the buyer's premium. The Art Newspaper reports the hammer price as $3.8 million.
