25.4 x 36.8 cm (10 x 14 1/2 in.)

John Singer Sargent (1856–1925), the American painter, made Capri Girl on a Rooftop in 1878. It is a small oil on panel, 25.4 by 36.8 centimetres (10 by 14 1/2 inches). A woman stands on a rooftop on Capri in evening light that sets a gold halo around her head. Long shadows fall across the roof, and white buildings and a curved rooftop rise at the right.

Christie's notes that the sitter may be Rosina Ferrara, following the Sargent scholar Richard Ormond; this is not a firm identification. Sargent painted another Capri Girl on a Rooftop in 1878, now in the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, so the two should not be confused. This version has a sketch titled Man in Gondola Sketching on the back.

The painting was sold at Christie's New York on 21 May 2015, as lot 45 of the American Art sale, from the private collection of Bernadette J. Berger. The estimate was $600,000–800,000. The price realised was $605,000, which Christie's states is the hammer price plus the buyer's premium.

The recorded provenance runs from the artist to Romón Subercaseaux and the Subercaseaux family, by descent. It then passes through Coe Kerr Gallery, Walter Schwab and Adelson Galleries in New York, and The Westervelt Company of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The consignor bought it from Adelson in 1994.
