The painting was sold at Christie's New York on 18 June 2014, as lot 100 in the sale An American Dynasty: The Clark Family Treasures. The estimate was $3,000,000–5,000,000. Christie's results page states that its sold prices include the buyer's premium, and the price realised was $4,309,000.

The recorded provenance begins with the artist. M. Knoedler & Co. in London acquired the picture from Sargent in 1913, and Charles S. Carstairs owned it in 1914. It later belonged to Daniel Farr of Philadelphia and then to Stephen C. Clark of New York. Knoedler, by then in New York, acquired it from Clark in 1929, and Anna Eugenia La Chapelle of New York owned it that year. It then passed by descent to the late owner.
