Mary Cassatt (1844–1926), the American painter, made The Sun Bath, with Three Figures in 1898–99. It is an oil on canvas, 64.1 by 91.8 centimetres. Two women and a baby are gathered in a composition Sotheby's calls thoroughly modern, with areas close to abstraction set beside more finished passages.
The painting was sold at Sotheby's New York on 28 October 2020, as lot 123 of the Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale. It came from the collection of Audrey Zauderer, shown in the series A Century of Style. The estimate was $2,500,000–3,500,000. Sotheby's series page says it sold for $4,376,000; its press release rounds the figure to $4.4 million. The sale belonged to Sotheby's live-streamed evening auctions of 28 October 2020, which its press release says brought $283.9 million across Contemporary and Impressionist & Modern Art.
The provenance Sotheby's gives starts with Galerie Paul Pétridès in Paris, and records an acquisition from the gallery around 1953. Nothing earlier is published.
