Paul Cézanne's Pichet de grès is a still life built around a stoneware jug. The catalogue raisonné, which also lists it as Stoneware Jug and La cruche, dates it to about 1893 to 1894 and records it as an oil on canvas of 38 by 46 centimetres. The catalogue lists it as FWN 853 and as Rewald 743.
According to that catalogue entry, the painting belonged to Baron Denys Cochin in Paris and then to Ambroise Vollard, who is recorded with it on 4 April 1900. Henri-Jean Laroche and Louis Hodebert followed, and then the dealers Reid and Lefevre in London and Knoedler in New York. William A. Clark of Santa Barbara is listed as owner from December 1928. The entry shows no further owner before the 1999 sale.
Sotheby's sold it in New York on 11 November 1999, in its Impressionist and Modern Art sale; the catalogue entry gives it as lot 120. The Art Newspaper's list of the top twenty prices of 1999 gives $16,502,500, or £10,058,270. The list does not say whether the figure includes the buyer's premium. The catalogue raisonné places the painting afterwards at the Fondation Beyeler, near Basel.
