Pierre-Auguste Renoir painted La route à Wargemont in 1879, near Paul Bérard's Château de Wargemont in Normandy. It is an oil on canvas, 54.7 by 65.7 centimetres, signed and dated 'Renoir. 79.' A winding stony road runs through the foreground, with women and children walking down it between seaside cottages. Red, pink and white flowers fill the garden on the left, and the blue-green sea lies under a pale sky behind.

The collector Jules Feder of Paris owned it first. Galerie Durand-Ruel in Paris acquired it from him on 25 June 1892, and the firm's New York gallery acquired it in March 1897. The dealer Sam Salz of New York acquired it on 30 December 1941. After Wildenstein and Company, also in New York, it was bought in 1946 by the late owner.

Christie's sold the painting in New York on 11 November 2021, as lot 54C of the 20th Century Evening Sale, against an estimate of $3,000,000 to $5,000,000. The price realised was $4,830,000, which Christie's states is the hammer price plus the buyer's premium.
